Two of us set off from the campsite an hour before the 4.30 sunrise and raced up the steep scree slope to set up at this view point. There was only ten minutes of useable light as the sun rose and almost immediatley went into a thick cloud blanket. The salt plains that cover many hundreds of kilometres gradually give way to this arid desert scrub reaching 5,000 metres in height. This is one of only a few locations that it is best to photograph during the middle of the day to get the light streaming down the rocks. We were rising at four to hike for six hours before the sun got too strong . The trek stays above 4000 metres for most of the time making it difficult to adjust to.
