The extremely dry and cold air in this rapidly diminishing glacier makes for perfect conditions for these stunted and gnarled Bristelcone pines. They can hold on to each needle for up to forty years and reach the age of five thousand years.]]>

The salt plains that cover many hundreds of kilometres gradually give way to this arid desert scrub reaching 5,000 metres in height. Thermal springs gush out of the ground in places and vast flocks of flamingoes dot the lakes pink.]]>

Polly and I had only just managed to find a tent sized space between all the loose boulders when we pitched in the dark. We were rewarded the next morning by this incredible sunrise striking the rocks. It was blowing a gale and freezing cold though , which does not show on film.]]>
Known as a slot canyon it is very narrow and full of tourists most of the time and so I decided the only way to do the space justice was to point the camera upwards. This is one of only a few locations that it is best to photograph during the middle of the day to get the light streaming down the rocks. They literally glow.]]>
