This small rocky outcrop sits in the middle of the huge flat salt desert that straddles the Bolivian border with Chile. The cactus grow to heights reaching seven metres or more and stand like silent sentinels. Eight of us stayed on the 'island' sleeping on mattresses on the dirt floor of a covered caveand we witnessed probably the most magical night sky I have ever seen.]]>

This ancient Inca citadel is rightly acclaimed as one of the most wonderous sites on the planet. The structure moulds itself to the hillside surrounded by towering jungle-clad peaks and is well worth the four day slog along the renowned Inca trail. There was no written Inca language so historians can only suppose what this city was for.]]>
Los Cuernos, or the horns, are the most remarkable mountain peaks that I have come across. Seen across an azure glacial lake at dawn they resemble a fantasy straight from the pages of Tolkien. Known for the incessant winds that blow off the huge glagier we spent six days hiking around its glowering form. Certainly one of the best trekking locations on the planet.]]>
